PolyCon XVII Preview   by Travis Truman Mooney (PolyCon XVII Coordinator)

As the time for PolyCon XVII draws closer, those of us on the convention planning committee are thinking about one thing: how do we make PolyCon better? We've asked the members of our mailing list that question before, and have come up with three key points: have more games, make it cheaper and add cool stuff.

We've made plans to try and accomplish all three of these goals. But, as always, we need your help to make the convention all it can be. We'd like to offer as many games as possible this year; after all, PolyCon is all about gaming. We've got over 30 games scheduled right now, and we'd like to see more than double that in our final PolyCon XVII schedule. So we're asking you, your gamemaster, your dog Sparky, anyone you know or think you know that can run a game (strategy, card, miniatures, or roleplaying) to sign up as a gamemaster for PolyCon. We'll even pay you to do it. We will refund $10 of your registration fee for each 24 gamer-hours you run. A gamer-hour is simply that, one hour of entertainment for each member of your game; six attendees for a four hour block would get you $10 back. Run a game and get some money back. It's that simple. Just check out our Help Wanted page for how you can register your game.

Another way to take the bite out of PolyCon's registration fee is tailored specifically towards the starving student. Come as a group from an established scholastic gaming club and we'll knock five bucks off your entry fee. That makes the cost for PolyCon only $20 before June 1 and only $25 at the door. However, we do insist that you provide us with proof of the group's existence and come with no less than five members. Contact our registration manager, Jef Watts, directly at jwatts@polycon.punk.net or 805.544.1386 for more information.

We've also revived a PolyCon tradition from past years to both offer something new and try and take a bite out of your cost for attending the con. This year will mark the return of seminars to PolyCon. We'll offer the time-honored "How we run PolyCon" seminar and are asking for ideas to base more seminars on. We've kicked around the idea of a homebrewers' roundtable (homebrew games, that is). So if you are a homebrew gamer or have an idea for a seminar, let us know. We'll refund the same amount of money that you would make for gamemastering the equivalent amount of time if you're selected as a panel member for one of the seminars. Also, if you are a homebrew developer, feel free to list your game as a gamemaster. We'd like to help independent developers all we can. Offering their games for playtest and giving them a chance to chat with other designers seemed like a natural match for the convention that brought us Wiz War, Golem, and Arduin development.

One of the greatest complaints we hear about PolyCon, and trust me, it's a complaint a lot of us share about Cal Poly, is the fact that the campus is alcohol-free. That's why we've made one of our most clandestine moves to date. A totally unrelated and completely casual wine tasting tour will take place Thursday, June 24. That's the day before the convention opens its doors. If you haven't had wine from the Paso Robles area, you're in for a treat. Local wines compete favorably with Napa vintages and some score higher than well-known French wines. You can email me directly for more information on the wine tasting tour, my contact information is provided below.

That's all we have for now. Progress on our Live Action Roleplay and AD&D Tournament is continuing, both are expected to be finalized well before the convention itself. If you'd like more information about the con, feel free to contact me via email at tmooney@polycon.punk.net or phone at 805.549.0988.
