Road to PolyCon XXIII   by Jefrey Watts

"How about squid con?"

If you've been coming to PolyCon for any length of time, then you might recognize me. My name is Jefrey and I'm a PolyCon junkie. I run games, organize events, call the auctions, and last year I was your co-con coordinator.

This year I'm back for more. I'm the con coordinator again. That's just how addicted I am to this convention. At least this year my co-conman is much prettier (Sorry Mike, but it's true). I'd like to thank Sarah Harrington for being my co-pilot as we lift off to a new year of wonder and imagination.

Okay, I think I over did it on the sappy symbolism just a little there.

"How about half-squid, half-flamingo con?"

So what is it about this convention that keeps me coming back year after year? If my math serves me correctly, this will be the 11th PolyCon I've attended and the 10th that I have worked in one capacity or another. While I could point to any number of reasons why I keep coming back, there is one that stands out to me.

There is a sense of community at our convention that I don^Òt feel at any other convention. Perhaps that is due to our size. Sure, attendance-wise we don't match up to Gencon or the other big names in the convention world, but that works in our favor. That guy who played the really cool elf in the D&D game is now the really cool hacker in Cyberpunk. And the guy that just backstabbed you in the LARP? He backstabbed you in that game of Diplomacy yesterday. You really should have known.

"I want zombie con!"

If you attend PolyCon more than once, you start to see familiar faces. The attendees you play with become more than just "John" or "Candace". There is something about that familiarity, that experience that helps build a friendship that might lead to new members of a gaming group or another fighter in your EverQuest adventuring party.

Yes, we play a lot of games at PolyCon and we have a lot of fun, but when it comes down to it, it's the people you see each day of the con and year after year that helps develop a sense of community that other conventions have a hard time duplicating. That, for me anyway, is the addictive quality of our convention.

"It's our 23rd year, how about 23-skidoo con?"

To changes gears slightly, one of the most discussed topics that revolve around the convention is what the theme will be. While the theme does not significantly impact the convention, it does help guide the flavor of the convention as well as provide a unifying guide for the artwork that we use to advertise the convention, put on the T-shirt, on the conbook, and on the badges.

This year there were several themes offered by our staff. Some of them feasible, some of them, well, were amusing. But this year, step into your TARDIS, run your DeLorean through the car wash, and spiff up your telephone booth cause we're TRAVELING THROUGH TIME! Yes, this year, after the dust settled, I chose to go with the theme that I had been pushing for over the past several years (sometimes it's good to be the guy in charge). PolyCon 23! Time travel!

Now is a great chance to pull your creative talents out and give them a shine. Find a way to get barbarians and mages running through a space station. Put laser-wielding techies in front of a group of hungry dinosaurs. Go back in time and kill your family and have fun with the paradox!

PolyCon 23, the Chronocon! Don't be late - or if you are, you better show up in a cool time machine!
