Industry Report   by Eric M. Aldrich I

It's hard to believe, but gaming is experiencing a phenomenon that by all accounts is greater than the Magic: the Gathering craze that hit a few years ago. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past year you've heard about the Pokemon collectable card game craze.

Pokemon has attracted the yougest audience this hobby has ever had. And it is a golden opportunity. Here is a chance to get a whole generation to accept our hobby as something normal and fun, a chance to mainstream the hobby like never before.

I can hear the groans now. "We don't want to deal with a bunch of kids," or "They're too immature," or most commonly, "I don't want to play that stupid card game."

Well, if we don't show any tolerance now they won't be around in a few years when they could start playing the games we like to play, be they board, role-playing, miniatures, or more sophisticated card games. Kids have incredible memories -- if they're treated poorly now by the older gaming crowd they will remember it for life and they won't be back.

Now, this doesn't mean you should join a group of 8-year-olds to go see a screen of Pokemon: the First Movie (I'll admit it, I found subtitle the most frightening thing about it), but play a game or two of the card game with them if you can. Who knows, you might even have a good time doing so.
